Preview: Lamar Jackson, DeShaun Watson, Baker Mayfield, Jabrill Peppers and Dede Westbrook are the five finalists for the 2016 Heisman Trophy. Jackson emerged early in the season as the heavy favorite based on his jaw-dropping stats. He has thrown for 3,390 yards, 30 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Jackson has better rushing statistics than most running backs. He has rushed for 1,538 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Louisville’s struggles down the stretch have opened the door for a player other than Jackson to take home the trophy. The Cardinals lost their last two games, and Jackson had a late fumble against Kentucky that contributed to Louisville’s loss. It could also hurt Jackson that Louisville is not one of the top teams in the country.
Watson has thrown for 3,914 yards, 37 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He helped Clemson get to their second straight College Football Playoff and is considered the most likely candidate to beat out Jackson for the award.. The challenge for Watson is his season will be compared to 2015 when he had better numbers.
